Bay Area, San Carlos – Belmont | Fun and Creative Newborn Photographer | What to Pack for the Hospital, Labor, Baby and I?

So, you are having a baby…   Congratulations! There are so many things to remember when packing for the hospital. It is easy to forget something. Here is a list to help you out. I hope you find it helpful. 🙂

What should I pack for labor?

  • Your picture ID and insurance card
  • Your birth plan (if you have one)
  • A nightgown of some kind for if you decided to pace in the hospital. Something comfortable
  • A lightweight t-shirt of some kind (something something that breathes easily) you might want to wear this during labor
  • Thing to help you relax: music (ipod or cd player), your own pillow, something you find reassuring
  • Something for downtime. Especially if you’re being induced, you may have a good amount of down time before labor actually starts. You could bring books, an ipad, magazines
  • Slip-on slippers (backless are best)
  • Socks, your feet will probably get cold at some point
  • Hairbands/clips, something to keep your hair up and away from your face
  • Chapstick of some kind. You might find your lips drying out during a long labor
  • A birth ball can be helpful in labor. Check with your hospital if they already have them. If not, bring your own

What should my Partner/Birth Coach pack?

  • Camera and or video camera (don’t forget the chargers, batteries, and memory cards!)
  • mobile phone and chargers
  • Toiletries
  • A change of clothing
  • Comfy shoes
  • Swimwear (if you plan to do a pool birth or use a pool during labor and they plan to join you)
  • Money for vending machines
  • Snack and drinks
  • Bendy straws so you partner or birth coach can help you with something to drink
  • Something for down time: books, ipad, laptop, something they like

What to pack for after the birth?

  • Nursing bra (or a few) and nursing pads
  • Your going home outfit. Something comfortable and loose fitting. It can take a while for your tummy to go down. Loose yoga pants or sweatpants are good ideas
  • Toiletries
  • nightshirt or t-shirt
  • comfortable underwear
  • maternity pads
  • eye mask

What Does Baby Need?

  • Onesies and/or sleepers (3+)
  • A going home outfit
  • A hat
  • Blankets. Though the hospitals are warm, baby will probably need a blanket at some point
  • Diapers, lots. Your baby may go through 10+ a day
  • Baby car seat. Some hospitals will not let you leave by car without one
